   2nd GCC Cardiovascular Conference Top


The 2nd GCC Cardiovascular Conference held in Muscat, Oman was organized by the Gulf Heart Association (GHA), which was founded two years ago during the First GCC Cardiovascular Conference held in Doha, Qatar.

Officials and members of the association met and finalized the by-laws, which included defining membership categories as follows: (a) Fellow (b) Member (c) Associate Member and (d) Honorary Member. All professional medical staff working in the field of cardiovascular medicine in the GCC states, citizens and non-citizens are eligible to apply as members. The By-Laws of the society and membership application form can be accessed on-line at the GHA website at: http://www.gulfheart.org/index.html.

The presidents of regional cardiac societies such as the Arab Heart Association, Egyptian Heart Association, Iranian Heart Association, and Turkish Heart Association attended the meeting. The regional WHO director, Dr. A. Gezairy pledged support to the GHA.

The European Society of Cardiology (ESC) president, Professor Jean-Pierre Bassand met with GHA president, H. E. Dr. H.A. Hajar Albinali, and other GHA officials and discussed the possibility of affiliation.

The GHA decided it would hold yearly GCC cardiovascular conferences in the region. The forthcoming conference will be held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia in January-February 2005.

Dr. Richard Jonas , who is Cardiovascular Surgeon-in-Chief, Department of Cardiac Surgery, Children's Hospital, Harvard Medical School has joined the Board of International Editorial Advisers of Heart Views, the official journal of the GHA. He is William E. Ladd Professor of Surgery at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Jonas is well-known and has published numerous papers in his specialty, Pediatric Cardiac Surgery. He is a member of various cardiothoracic surgery societies such as The American Association for Thoracic Surgery, The Society of Thoracic Surgeons, Congenital Heart Surgeons' Society, and Cardiothoracic Surgery Network. In addition, he is a member of various research committees such as Graham Education and Research Foundation as well as a member of the Publications Committee of The American Association for Thoracic Surgery.

He intends to take a very active editorial role in Heart Views.
